LETTERS, Page 8Press Objectivity
It is futile for the New York Times, the Washington Post and
other news media to forbid their reporters to participate in
abortion-related or other demonstrations (PRESS, Aug. 14).
Restricting political activity will not prevent bias. Reporters and
editors, even if they do not take part in demonstrations, should
be required to disclose their personal views on sensitive topics.
It is opinions, not activity, that induce bias. We readers deserve
to know where they stand.
Tom Pittman
Spreckels, Calif.
I find it amusing that in the name of journalistic objectivity,
the New York Times, which is noted for its liberal slant, denies
its reporters their fundamental right as Americans to participate
in the political process.
